Outreach Opera thoroughly enjoyed their first open-air concert back, after six months of silence due to Covid 19 restrictions.
Hoghton Tower welcomed them back for a concert of opera highlights, songs from the musicals and some of the usual Last Night At The Proms anthems. Joined by conductor Helen Harrison on piano and Tenor John Wood, Outreach Opera sang to a sold out audience, who enjoyed picnics on the lawn of the beautiful Wilderness Garden.
Why not join our onlineopera workshops, to learn some of the tricks of the trade, whilst singing sumptuous music. The Zoom workshops, which will take place over the course of a weekend, are designed to take you on a musical journey full of vocal exploration, and all the drama that comes with singing opera! The grand finale will see all participants coming together, alongside our professional opera singers, in a virtual video performance of the chosen piece.
All abilities of singers are welcome to join the workshops, no experience is necessary. You will be sent music and vocal recordings prior to the workshop and we will always be on hand to help you with any additional needs you may have.
The fee for the weekend workshops and virtual video performance is £20.00. There are no hidden extras. All sheet music and vocal recordings are included and a copy of the final performance will be sent to you to keep.
Each workshop will be tailored to your voice type, so Altos will meet with Altos, Basses will meet with Basses, and so on. The Zoom link for the meeting will be sent to you in advance via email. You will then need to click on the link at the scheduled meeting time, and off you go! NB Please make sure you have downloaded the Zoom app to your chosen device, prior to the meeting.
A recording of each workshop will be available, to enable you to recap the workshop in your own time. Here’s the extra fun part…once the series of workshops are complete, you’ll send us a video of your chorus performance, to add to our virtual opera chorus video of the chosen piece.

and Italian art song, Lieder and the great American songbook
John originally trained in Musical Theatre at The University of Chichester, but later began to study opera at the London College of Music under renowned British Baritone William Robert Allenby. He recently performed the roles of Edmondo & the Dancing Master in Puccinis Manon Lescaut at Opera Holland Park. Other roles include Arturo (Lucia Di Lammermoor), IL Conte Di Lerma (Don Carlo) at Fulham Opera, The Queen of Hearts (Alice’s Adventure’s in Wonderland) OHP. The Dancing Master (Das Spitzentuch Der Konigin) Straus II long lost operetta which enjoyed a residency at Wilton’s Music Hall.
John made his Royal Albert Hall debut in 2018 with BBC radio 3’s Opera and the Silver & the Silver Screen, hosted by Petroc Trelawny. John is also a Solo cabaret cruise ship headliner for PIHA International Entertainment. Future engagements include Ajax & Achillies in Le Belle Helene for New Sussex opera and future cruises with P&O.
Thank you to St James’ Church in Brindle for marvellously hosting Outreach Opera’s summer 2018 concert. It was wonderful to see such a turn out, in spite of the thunder and rain, which created a dramatic backdrop for the evening.
Local choir, Hoghton In Harmony joined Outreach for the concert, filling the church with their glorious sounds.
The concert marked the end of Outreach Opera’s 2017/18 season and what a fantastic year it has been.

Outreach Opera returned to Hoghton Tower this summer for another journey through life, love, happiness and tragedy.
A great introduction to opera, Love, Lies and Tonic presents drama in bite sized chunks. Set amidst the hustle and bustle of small village life, Love, Lies and Tonic joins the locals down at the pub, offering a chance to witness clandestine conversations in dark corners, revealing the intricacy of community life.
Audience members enjoyed picnics on the lawn, surrounded by the rolling hills of Lancashire, during the extended interval.
Outreach Opera enjoys bringing opera to unusual venues and so they used Hoghton Tower’s Great Barn for this particular production. As the home of Hoghton Tower’s Farmer’s Market on a Sunday, the Great Barn is less accustomed to musical events, but it’s beautifully rustic nature provided the perfect setting for Love, Lies and Tonic.
